However, unlike other North States gates it does not work with small areas at all. The smallest opening it can work with is 5 feet (57 in.). It is great for blocking off a porch or other wide areas.  "Great for the price" 2009-12-22
By A. Draper
I bought this gate years ago and have used it for all 5 of my children. It is great at blocking off a wide opening. I had to stop the boys (when they were 3 and 1) from pushing on it, but it lasted through all my kids. For the price, it is excellent! I was going to give it to my sister, but I lent it out and didn't get it back. I'll have to order her a new one.

 "Pretty good!!" 2009-12-20
By 6Poindexters (Oklahoma City, Ok)
I bought this gate about 4 months ago. I have four children, three year old twin boys, a 18 month old and a 6 month old. I was tired of tripping over them in my very small kitchen. First I did not anchor the gate in the studs and the gate pulled right out. But once I put it in the studs it was great. The only problem I have had is that the twins like to rock it, that can cause the screws holding the brackets to back out, but nothing a few turns of a screwdriver can't fix. I like that the anchors are really just simple hooks you can find anywhere. I was able to buy a second set of install hooks, so I can move the gate easily. I can have it blocking off the whole kitchen, or I can back it up and allow the kids in the dining area but still away from the stove. The gate was well worth the [..]. We are moving and I doubt I will have uses for it in the new house. :-(

 "great for price" 2009-12-01
By happy mommy
We purchased a new home with beautiful wood floors and white chairs and squares. Needless to say I wanted a gate that would look nice. Being that we needed 3 gates, but only for a year, I didn't want to spend and arm and leg for them. We primed and painted these gates and added felt to the bottom so they don't scratch the floors. They are high enough to keep my 3 and 1 yr olds in the kitchen/great room and low enough to step over. So far I'm happy and probably saved at least $100. If we had needed gates longer, I would have gotten something a bit more durable, but my 3 year old was comfortably climbing stairs at 2 1/2, so I anticipate the same with my 15 month old in a year.

"Does the job, worked very well." 2009-11-23
By Alexia E. Purdy (Las Vegas, NV)
I found this gate to be great for the price. At first when it arrived, I thought it was bulky and not what I really wanted, it took some muscle to install, you must install it into hard studs in the wall or I could see it ripping out. Once I got it installed, and I'm not a very strong girl, and I was able to drill it in! It was wonderful. We have a large opening to the kitchen with a fridge in the way so this ended up a bit diagnol on the entrance but it works fabulous. Even my 7 year old had a time figuring out how to open it, I had to show her a couple of times. My wild 20 month old is very strong and shakes it all the time but it has not fallen off the screws or wall yet and keeps him out very well, he gives me death looks when I'm in the kitchen and yells at me to let him in. Overall, it's great!

"Does what is advertises, but not a great design" 2009-11-03
By J. Cullen (Boston, MA)
We bought this to span a wide area in our entry way which was the only way to block the stairs in our house. It is basically a run of the mill wooden stair gate on steroids.

Pros:

- Does its job. It can span a very wide opening and when it is attached it is secure. (be sure to check the minimum opening size as it is still pretty wide at its smallest setting)

- Can retract/swing to allow people to walk through.

Neutral:

- requires installing i-screws into studs or other substantial materials. I don't think there is a better way to do this as a pressure gate would not be very secure.

Cons:

- the description says it "swings". I was expecting some kind of door in them middle, but really you just unlatch one of the sides and the whole thing pivots side that is still attached. Not elegant, but it works.

- It is not easy to attach and remove from the iscrews. I find myself stepping over it to avoid having to "swing" the gate open.

- Even when installed the gate is "rattley". It is not going to come apart, but it does not have a solid feel to it.

Not a joy to use, but I couldn't find anything else that would do the job so I guess I can't complain too much.

Easy to install and the gate swings in both directions for easy in and out of each area. Reasonably priced...We would highly recommend this gate....

"Doesn't work with my cat" 2009-12-15
By M. Plott (USA)
I bought this gate to keep my cat out of my bedroom. There are plenty of reviews that said it works with other people's cats. It did work for the first few months, but then my 9 lb cat found out he could jump up, touch/land on the top of the gate and hop over. He seemed surprised when he did it the first time and now that he knows he can, there's no turning back. My cat was a stray before I got him, so it's possible he picked up some tricks and learned some creative jumping when he lived outside.

Now I've loosened the knobs on the gate and I keep it up when I'm outside the bedroom (the cat doesn't want in unless I'm there) and I remove the gate from the doorway and shut the door when I want to keep him out.

Overall, I think the gate will work for most people and maybe even for people with heavy cats that can't jump that high. For my purposes, the gate is ok.

 "Frustrating to use" 2009-12-28
By dbd2 (NY)
I agree with the other reviews that say it takes a while to put up because it's difficult to adjust to the correct width and lock into place. I also have the problem of not having perfectly parallel walls so that the gate does not make contact at all 4 points. I thought originally that not having to install hardware would be nice and we could move the gate from one doorway to another throughout the day as needed, but the gate is difficult to use and not very sturdy and thus useless.

 "Can't use it anymore" 2009-12-06
By K. Beltz (Georgia)
I have used these gates for several months. They serve their purpose, though they are remarkably frustrating to adjust, especially with a child at your heels. My problem with them now is that my 18 month old can climb the gate. I did not think of this months ago when I purchased the gates. The holes are large enough for him to fit his feet into, and the plastic is sturdy enough to provide him support to climb over. That makes these gates entirely pointless and unsafe.

"might work in some special circumstances?" 2009-09-03
By Charles Hoffman (Des Moines, IA USA)
We purchased this gate to put at the top of the stairs in our rented split-foyer. The diagram for installation of hinge hardware shows the casement hinges to be installed at 3" and 23" from the floor -- this turned out to be not high enough off the floor for the door hinge to rest on the casement hinge, as not only does the door extend more than 3" below the bottom hinge, but in this setup the base moulding on the wall obstructs operation of the gate -- and also too much distance between hinges, as the door hinges are 17" apart, not 20". This was aggravating since I followed the instructions, then had to remove the hinges from the wall and start over trying to install it another way, leaving ugly holes in my wall.

Also, I realized that the instructions warn not to install the hardware in sheetrock or plaster, only in solid wood or metal. How many places in your home are the walls sold wood? Almost nowhere; walls in almost every home I have been inside in my lifetime are either plaster or sheetrock. Perhaps the manufacturer thinks we all live in Keebler elf trees. The stubby little screws included don't do enough to secure the hinges to a sheetrock or plaster wall, but I thought maybe the metal corner bead would be "metal" enough. I was mistaken.

There is also no good way to install the door sockets. According to the instructions, you should "mount" the square pieces of foam tape into the recessed areas on the back, then remove the backing to expose the adhesive that affixes them to the wall. This makes no sense at all, because the tape is only adhesive on one side, so it can't attach to both the sockets and to the wall. I considered using the two extra screws to mount them, but each socket only has one screw hole, at the top, which allows the socket to swing.

Once I had it set up, it could not have withstood the force of my unusually small seven-month old falling onto it. Extending and retracting the gate was also aggravatingly difficult, enough that one risks yanking the hinges out of the wall trying to pull on it.

With a little ingenuity, you might be able to get this gate to work in a doorway in the pressure-hold installation. You would need to invest in some drywall screws long enough to get through to a stud, and drill extra holes in the door-sockets. For that much trouble, you might just want to buy one that's designed better to begin with.

 "Love this gate" 2009-05-04
By Robert Blanco (Phoenix AZ)
The Supergate III is awesome. It is a standard gate that does it's job and does it well. I have a 36 LB 2 year old, 8 yr old, 10 yr old, a 40 LB dog and 2 cats.

The gate is easy to adjust. Just point the adjustable arm down and adjust the gate to fit the opening. It slides easily and if necessary, can be adjusted with 1 hand. If you don't point the adjustable arm down, it won't slide. In which case you may find yourself winding the arm to adjust the gate. To those that do? "Ha ha, you're an idiot!"

To the engineer: Look at the gate, see how it works before you complain that it doesn't.

It doesn't take paint off my walls and I have a cheap home built by DR Horton. It keeps my kid and the dog behind the gate just fine. The only time the gate didn't hold was when you fail to clear the gate when going over it, which only happend 3 times in the 6 months I owned the gate. My 4 and a half foot tall daughter gets by the gate with no problem.

At night I take down the gate and collapse it down and open it up when I need it. If you require instructions to know how to operate gate then this is not the gate for you. I love this gate and own 2 of them.

 "Difficult locking mechanism...flimsy construction" 2007-02-25
By J. Bruce (Springboro, Ohio United States)
We purchased 2 of these gates for the bottom and top of our stairs. This gate is flimsy and cheap. The locking mechanism aligns with an eye clip, and you have to ensure both the bottom metal hook sits into the eye clip while at the same time squeezing the top lock to open it then grasp around the top eye clip! Not an easy thing to do...it also does NOT secure the width of the gate, it has an open sliding design so if you over-slide it you're jamming the metal gate locks into the wall. My [...]was not able to squeeze the lock, and I also had a difficult time. I would NOT reccomend this gate, it's too chintzy and difficult for day to day life.

 "Not that great" 2006-10-29
By middletown mama
The gate was easy to install and looks fine, if a little chitzy. BUT, the latch is near impossible to do one handed, and really hard to do with two. You certainly can't do it with the light off. Sort of a drag when you have to go through it in the middle of the night. THe top and bottom each only clicks into the eye part of hook and eye set. I don't think it's that sturdy. I wouldn't recommend this gate if you have to go through it often. Lots of them are much easier.

"Good gate, but could be better!" 2009-10-25
By R. Gamez (pico)
I absolutely love this gate even though I've found 1 flaw with it. It's not the old one. I think it was called the lift & lock gate. I got this one because the old one my husband finally broke so I needed another one for the top of the stairs. All the other gates are expensive & since we have a baby and a toddler the old one wouldn't do. I went to Babies 'r Us & found this gate. It seemed perfect since our stairway is wider than most. I have to admit it was a pain to put together because I put all the screws in to hold the gate together only to find that they have to be really loose to adjust it to the right length. No problem just tighten them enough where the buttons don't fall off. It's not that hard to install the hinges if you're using the hardware mount. You don't need the templates if you have 2 people. Just lengthen the gate, slide it in the hinges then once it's against the wall have 1 person slide the gate out then the other drill them into place. Plus this gate will slide out the hinges if you want to move it somewhere else or take it with you to use it as a pressure mount. And that's where it's not a "GREAT" but still a well worth it.

You do have to loosen the screws to adjust the gate then tighten the screws again to have the gate fit other areas. With the lift & lock gate once it was unlocked you could adjust it to whatever fit you needed. You didn't have to worry about screwing anything in. But sometimes with the other gate it was a hassle to slide it closed when the little hinges would come out of their holes which is why my husband finally broke out out of frustration when trying to adjust it. It's probably why they didn't make this one the same way. Plus, it allows us to simply unlock the gate & swing it out of the way so both our toddler & ourselves can do it one-handed to get up or down the stairs without having to unlock it and readjust it using the pressure mounted system. That REQUIRED both hands. All in all I think this gate is definitely worth the money with it's versatility and ease of use. So much so that we bought 2, 1 for the top & bottom of our stairs.

Oh, & it does have Smart Technology which is great. But if you have uneven walls like mine it won't show green; however, the gate is still secure. My husband yanks on it to make sure it's closed.

"Ugly, flimsy, and hard to adjust" 2009-10-15
By Chris M.
This gate only looks nice on one side. From the other side, you can see why the gate is so flimsy. It is very poorly designed. Also, to adjust this gate for a different location in your house, you have to loosen and then tighten 4 screws.

I recommend model 41823 instead. It looks better, feels sturdier, and is easier to adjust. It is also harder for a toddler to climb.

 "Works like a champ!!" 2009-09-12
By Susan (ZEBULON, NC USA)
I bought this to replace a North States Super Gate. Finding a wide width gate that works is not so easy. This Evenflo gate works great. We use it to keep our dogs in the kitchen . The North Gates was a real pain in the *** it would often stick when trying to open it, instead of gliding freely . By the time you got it open and were trying to pull it closed the dogs had escaped!! They learned when it was just the right time to make a break for it!!The Evenflo is just plain simple and functional! Since we do not have any small children in our house I used a tie wrap to keep the lever open so we did not have to work the latch when opening/closing. The Evenflo is also less expensive and in my estimation made better.

Installation requires some measuring and screwing it to the surface. I used an electric drill to make piolt holes, installation took me about 20 minutes. You will need a drill, screw driver and a pencil to mark where to drill the pilot holes.

I do not know how well it works with children but I would be willing to bet it does a great job.

Well worth the monry.

 "falls short of ideal" 2009-07-30
By Craig T. Baker
I bought this to replace another brand improperly installed and difficult to operate by my 4 year old and our 88yr old grandfather who lives with us. This model is not much more easy for them to operate, fact the 88yr old (has parkinson's) cant really do it and the metal used for the latches are weaker. It claims to be a "swinging" gate but the bottom metal latch bends when swung, I fear after enough swings it will eventually break. The top latch is of decent design but when coupled with the bottom part it becomes more difficult. The plastic cover on the top also makes it tougher to expand and contract than a normal expansion gate. One redeeming quality is that it expands to 60" without the need of extensions.

I was really excited about this gate due to its great reviews. It is a nice gate - I like that it is clear and it is really easy and fast to mount and un-mount onto walls. However, my 27 month old was able to climb over it as it has a little ledge where the white plastic meets the clear plastic...so if you have a climber like I do, I would go with another gate option...

After drilling the holes for the swinging side of the gate the top mounting bracket was too low. After unscrewing the bracket and putting on the top peg I remarked the screw holes for the new position. Thus making two new holes 1/2 inch from the old ones. Also before drilling the holes for the other latching side I lined up the bumpers and made sure they were right. Next I drilled the holes in the door frame and they did not line up with the holes on the plastic. I used one hole to screw the bracket on and then re-drilled the other which ended up being 1/4 inch from the first. I guess it is all working now but have more holes in my woodwork than I wanted.
